Our Team
Meet our growing team of subject matter experts, PhD students and associates
Professor Douglas Creighton
Deputy Director, Institute for Intelligent Systems Research and Innovation
Dr Doug Creighton is a lead researcher in the largest research team in the field of simulation and optimisation for infrastructure, security and manufacturing systems in Australia. He is actively involved in process simulation, empirical modelling, soft computing, human machine interface and analyses of complex systems operating under uncertainty, variability and continuous change.
Dr Dominic Ahiaga-Dagbui
Associate Head of School (Research), Major Infrastructure Projects Researcher
Dominic’s research focuses on delivery of large and complex infrastructure projects, taking into consideration future operational costs, adaptability and end-user needs. His academic contributions are in the areas of construction cost overrun, future-proofing infrastructure, front-end project governance and client-capabilities for cost-effective asset procurement.
Professor Seng Loke
Professor In Computer Science, Co-Director of the IoT Platforms and Applications Lab
Prof Loke’s research interests include the Connected and Automated Vehicles (CAV), Cyber-Safe Connected Vehicle, Internet of Things (IoT) and Future Transport, Smart Cities and Intelligent Transport Systems. He is Co-director of the IoT Platforms and Applications Lab, within the Centre for Internet of Things Ecosystem Research and Experimentation (CITECORE) at Deakin University.
Associate Professor Ashim Debnath
Senior Lecturer in Transportation Engineering
Dr Debnath is an Engineer with over 15 years of in transport engineering research. His research interest cover Smart transportation, Traffic Engineering, Smart Cities and Transportation, Statistical modelling of transport data, road safety modelling, and road user behaviour
Dr Asheem Shrestha
Senior Lecturer in Construction Management; Researcher in Megaprojects delivery
Asheem’s research expertise is in mega projects delivery and public private partnerships, particularly in areas of risk assessment, management and allocation. His other research interests include procurement of large infrastructure projects, project financing and engineering ethics.
Dr Reza Hosseini
Senior Lecturer in Construction Technology (Melbourne University)
Dr. Hosseini’s expertise centres on digital engineering and circular construction, areas in which he has been notably active, evident from his ranking within the top 2% of researchers between 2021 and 2023. He has made substantial contributions to his field, authoring around 240 papers and book chapters, primarily focusing on sustainable construction engineering.
Professor Jemal H. Abawajy
Director of the Cyber-Physical Research Lab
Jemal Abawajy is Professor of cyber-physical systems at the Faculty of Science, Engineering and Built Environment, Deakin University. His research spans cyber-security, Internet of Things (IoT), Cloud Computing, Data Science and Big Data Intelligence. He is a Senior Member of IEEE Society; IEEE Technical Committee on Scalable Computing; IEEE Technical Committee on Dependable Computing and Fault Tolerance.
Associate Professor Farnad Nasirzadeh
Associate Professor in Construction Management; Researcher in Modelling Complex Systems
Farnad’s research focuses on modelling and simulation of large and complex infrastructure projects, particularly in the areas of productivity, sustainability and risk management.
PhD Students and Associates
Tom Moore
PhD Student: A Risk-based Approach for Major Transport Infrastructure Appraisal and Assurance
Tom is a Chartered Professional Civil Engineer with a master’s degree in engineering project management. Tom has over 16 years of experience in the development and delivery of rail infrastructure projects. This capability extends to the fields of project management, project engineering, quality assurance, risk management and construction delivery. This background has been achieved by working in the construction industry, public sector and consulting profession.
Eric (Yizi) Chen
PhD Student: Optimism Bias in transport infrastructure project appraisals
Eric’s research critically explores the dynamics between project appraisal, politics, and project performance for megaprojects in the transport infrastructure sector in Australia and he endeavours to make novel contributions to discourse within industry and government bodies responsible for evaluating and delivering transport infrastructure
